When the history is over, many therapists rush on to what they think is the real "meat" of of the exam. It's not, the initial interaction sets the stage for the entire encounter. Don't assume the patient understood everything you explained, if you explained anything at all. Sometimes my history is 30-40 minutes depending on how much education or de-education I feel is needed.
