Teaching a recent seminar in Santiago, one of the Spanish speaking participants said he liked to ask his patients a particular question. At first both the interpreter and I thought something was lost in translation, but we both heard correctly.
After a patient tells you about their pain, particularly the intensity, ask
Why isn't your pain worse?
If patients thought about this a fraction of how much I did at that moment, there could be quite the "A HA" moment. This may make the right patient think about their pain and situation more globally rather than focusing on how "bad" their pain is right now. #stopthoughtviruses
