What is the latest research on concussions? What is the best practice for treatment post concussion? What IS a concussion? If you’ve asked any of the aforementioned questions or are even slightly curious about concussions then this is the podcast episode for you.
The NFL has stepped up its concussion awareness. They admitted there is a problem and began to delve into looking more into it. This does not mean concussions haven’t been studied up until that point.
Quite the contrary. However, even with ongoing research there still is no good research available. Our guest on this episode of Therapy Insiders podcast, Dr. Jessica Schwartz, is working to change that. Jess is a leading expert on concussions and she helped us understand how disjointed concussion research and understanding really is.
About Jessica (from www.PT2go.co)
Meet Dr. Jessica B. Schwartz PT, DPT, CSCS
Jessica is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) who has always had a deep commitment to BEST practice. Specializing in Orthopaedics, Jessica was one of the inaugural six to be admitted to the post-doctoral Clinical Residency in Orthopaedics at New York Universityafter her four year clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Dominican College. Her undergraduate work at Ithaca Collegeearned her a degree in Exercise Science where she devoted her time and energy to assisting in the creation of a pilot childhood obesity program at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY.
After spending a full year rehabilitating after a motor vehicle accident, Jessica decided to share her post-concussive experience with the world scheduled to commence in the Spring of 2015. Her intent is to educate the healthcare professional about concussion identification, treatment and management. Not only will she provide the latest multidisciplinary approach necessary to treat the concussion patient, she will personally share what it feels like to have experienced a full year of neurological and orthopedic symptoms as well. By combining the latest evidence based medicine in a TED-esque story telling format, she hopes to educate the provider of choice to understand and connect to their patient population at a deeper level in order to provide the unprecedented care that is lacking globally for this patient population.
Jessica is a National Spokeswoman and member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), American Headache Society (AHS), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). She also holds certification with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Board Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
Conceptually, PT2Go was conceived during Jessica’s time as a resident. During this time, she learned to truly appreciate the multidisciplinary communication, candor and enthusiasm across all aspects of medicine (See PT2Go’s Mission Statement).
During her residency, she learned to truly appreciate evidence based medicine (EBM) and realized ‘I do have time for this’ and ‘I don’t have to be behind a desk or work in a laboratory to practice EBM.’ PT2GO is intended for the medical professional on the Go who needs to access thought provoking and relevant information on the fly.
Jessica hopes to share the most practical and accessible EBM tools and techniques that can be translated into direct clinical practice all while being communicated clearly and concisely to the patient, physician, and her fellow-colleagues.
Jessica is a native New Yorker born, raised and still residing in New York City. She enjoys being outdoors riding her Trek Madone all over the country while her two dogs Bailey and Bella keep her on her toes. During her free time, you can find her updating her music playlists, searching for the next best Riesling, learning about sustainability, or on the constant prowl for culinary greatness.
Thanks for coming along with me in my journey of forever learning, knowledge translation, adventure and fun!
Stay tuned for special guest pieces to come!
